September 6 marked my last Sunday as pastor of FBC Cameron, MO after almost ten years of ministry there and twenty-one years since I accepted God’s call to ministry.  Thank you for your support here at my blog over the last several years. This blog was begun on August 19th, 2005 while I was attending a meeting in Richmond about connecting churches to missions. It chronicles a tremendous journey in my life and the life of our family over the last several years. Thank you for your encouragement along the way!

I have included part my letter of resignation below.

I want to thank you for allowing me to serve you as your pastor these years. We have witnessed God’s Mighty Hand and I praise Him for what He has done in our lives. I pray that the labors invested here will reap a mighty harvest for His Kingdom in years to come. I am confident that you are well established in His Word and His Will as you move forward in new endeavors. I pray as Paul did in Ephesians 4:1-6

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

In His Service,

Pastor Jay Raines

Well, I am still doing research and writing. I need some more data and put together this little online survey to gather some more information. Please fill it out and tell me what you think. (Warning: it may not be the last survey - this is all a learning process for me.)

Gently Called

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Having been raised in a pastor’s family, I can identify many times where I sensed God drawing me into a relationship with Himself. I accepted Christ by the age of eleven. Throughout my entire childhood and teen years, I was fortunate to be exposed to many different ministry situations. Whether it was roofing a house, witnessing, leading small groups, sharing my testimony, or mission trips, I always seemed to be drawn toward doing more ministry. I had developed a love for drafting and architecture in junior high and high school. I believed that I had the skills to pursue a career in architecture. I began to surround myself with books and people that helped me learn more about that field, but I didn’t realize at the time that I was being called to ministry. (more…)

Passion

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

We were at a children’s production of Annie today and I was amazed at how incredibly organized the stage production was. Everyone seemed to have a job and they were doing their jobs like clockwork. Greeters, tickets, programs, seating, clean-up, lights, stage, sound, …. To think: someone organized all that with volunteer help! As we exited the theater, I heard someone comment about their husband’s work with the production. She said, “It’s his passion.” It really made sense. In that theater, everyone was there by choice. Even the children going through the seats after the production with Wal-mart sacks picking up trash before the next performance. They were all there because they had a passion for theater. (Incidentally, many of them also have a passion for Christ. This was a Christian Youth Theater club and they were unashamed of their faith in Christ.)

Passion. I love it when I see people glorifying God passionately with their lives. Don’t fill a position at your church, fulfill your passion serving Christ in your church, work, family, community.

Passion will help us at FBC to - love. serve. grow.

Come with us!

Steps to the TempleNow is a great time to start planning ahead for your trip to Israel next fall! This is one of those trips that every Bible believing Christian ought to consider. Michele and I will be leading a group next October 21-30 in the land of the Bible. We would like for you to go with us. October is a wonderful time of year to be in the normally hot land of Israel. In fact, much of the world’s citrus comes from the plains of Israel. Ladies, most of the diamonds of the world pass through the nation of Israel’s diamond syndicates before they reach your ring finger.

All that considered, we want to show you some of the amazing discoveries of Israel related to Biblical events. The picture in this post is a more recent excavation site of the actual steps that would have led up to the temple mount. In fact, when I was there in 1999, these were not uncovered, but when Michele went in 2005 they had been opened to the public. Follow this link to learn more about the trip and our itenerary. Hopefully, you can come with us and experience the land of the Bible.

Blogger Alert

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Attention all bloggers at FBC Cameron! I am in the process of gathering stories about members of our church as a way to tell who we are, where we’ve come from and encourage us into the future. I would encourage you to blog the stories of people in our church (You don’t have to use full names) and tell about stories of their faith. Stories such as…

  • their testimony / salvation experience
  • a struggle in their life and how they faced it
  • one of those “God moments” where His plan was made clear
  • etc.

When you post these blogs let me know and I will copy them over to the church blog for these stories of faith.

Clarify

Friday, March 16th, 2007

We are grateful to have a story in the local paper (here - Citizen Observer, March 15, 2007, A7-8) about our upcoming 3-team mission trip to Romania. However, I would like to clarify a few of the statements.

  • “yearly mission” - we have gone each year, but we have not made plans to go yearly in the future.
  • “Our goal…is to help people build relationships with God.” Yes, but, more importantly, with Christ. Most of the people of Romania seem to believe in God. They just believe that God is unknowable in the sense of having a relationship. When we go, we talk about the “National Bible Reading Campaign” and encourage the Romanains to read the Bible for themselves.
  • “When buildings are put up, you automatically eliminate a group of people and their chance to experience a relationship with God.” I think what I actually said was something like “as soon you build a building, it immediately limits how many people can come.” We are focused on starting house churches that can spread more rapidly than building buildings.
  • “Many feel that they are not even allowed to establish a personal relationship with God.” It is not so much that they think they are not allowed, they just don’t know how or know that they can. Their concept of church is that you follow the rules, pay the church, and attend church to get to heaven. Many do not live transformed lives. Our missionary Troy Geddes, calls them “repenters” instead of believers, because they exhibit changed lives.

I’ll stop there. Thank you Cameron-Citizen for the exposure. We are exited to see what God will do with this work in Galati, Romania and how that will positively effect Cameron. Everyone who goes comes back as a better citizen of Cameron to make an impact here at home. Thank you for supporting the trip.

Message to God

When I was about 10 years old, I remember being at a summer boys camp. It was an incredible week. We had so much fun fishing and hiking. One of the most memorable events of that week was what happened on the last day. Everyone was packed and the church vans were loaded to leave, but we had one more session in the old tabernacle. The camp pastor began to speak to us about commitment. I don’t remember the words that he said, exactly, but I do remember that it was a challenging moment for me. What was I going to do with what I had learned? How was I going to live my life?

He challenged us to make a life commitment. We were given a piece of foil and a notecard. On the notecard, we were challenged to write a message to God. I remember putting a message to God on that card about my desire to live my life for Him. We were encouraged to take that card, wrap it in foil, and hide it somewere on the campground. The foil was intended to preserve it. I went out into the woods and buried it under a pile of rocks. I will always remember that day. There was a sense of permanence about that moment that has stayed with me over the years. I returned to that campground several years later and searched for my message to God, but I was never able to find that exact location again. I know that whether that rock pile remains, the commitment that I feel in my heart is as strong as that day when I wrote those words on the card, wrapped them in foil, and buried them under an altar of rocks.

God is asking you to make a commitment to Him. He is the only one who can make your promise stand the test of time.
